Aisha's Statement

I am Aisha Baro, running for re-election as a North Star progressive democrat so I can help augment the impact of local grassroots efforts.Having been a delegate for the last two years I have a better appreciation for the role and how I can leverage it to influence the party policies and identity.

Over this holiday season, my dad passed away after a short-lived battle with pancreatic cancer at the blessed age of 90. He had spent his lifetime fighting for the independence and representation of his country Senegal on the international scene. His life represents the kind of public service legacy I too want to have in my local community and in the United States of America, a country which is welcoming of all including folks like me with origins rooted in beautiful far-away lands, and who augment the American fabric. 

Our nation’s identity is at risk, what it means to be an American is under question, our party is in an existentialist crisis as shown by the last election and this is impacting our ability to win both local and national elections and implement progressive policies. I know this well as an engaged citizen and a professional in the social services sector.

After almost 2 decades in Biotech, I made a pivot 4 years ago to be the executive director of a nonprofit organization that catalyzes Bay Area Life Science companies into giving back. Through that role, I see the great inequities that often  result  from policies that need to evolve. For example, in the Bay Area, homelessness has reached alarming heights yet it did not explode overnight. This crisis is the direct effect of a dangerous cocktail of increasingly unaffordable housing, escalating mental health issues, and social justice policies that have impacted our most vulnerable to a point where they enter homelessness and have difficulties getting out of it. 

This time around as a delegate I want to focus my platform on what it means to be a democrat, play a role in reshaping the party’s identity and educate the public about how they can engage. My focus areas are economic revitalization, opportunity creation and education. I am honored to have earned the support of a wide range of elected and community leaders, including County Supervisor Ray Mueller and incoming Congressman Sam Liccardo. Re-elect me; I will be honored to continue to represent you.
